Corn

If you look to the south or east of Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch, you can see a few of the corn fields that are planted and harvested by Raasch Farms.

Farming Calendar: Planting - April Harvesting - September/October.

Types of Corn: Types of Corn Planted: yellow field corn or “dent corn” Uses of Field Corn: primarily used for animal feed and industrial uses such as ethanol and cooking oils

Interesting Trivia: Q. Why is it called dent corn?

A. It’s called “dent corn” because of the dent that forms on the kernel as the corn dries.

Q. What is attached to each and every sweet corn kernel?

A. A piece of silk

Q. What are silks?

A. Each string of silk is actually a tiny tube that allows pollen to travel from the tassel all the way down into the unfertilized ear of corn. This pollination process is how kernels form.
